her face fell, her smile shattering to the floor into countless shards, a perfect imitation
of what had happened inside her.
"aww. that's sweet," she said into the phone, forcing a smile. the expression came out
as a grimace.
words from one of her favourite songs came to mind.
now all that's left of me is what I pretend to be,
sewn together, but so broken up inside.
"oh I know, eh? he's so cute!" giggled her friend in reply.
"yeah, well that's him," she said, fighting tears. she wouldn't cry now. no, her friend
wouldn't know the impact of his words on her. "listen, I have to go. it was nice talking
to you again."
"so soon?" asked her friend.
"yeah. I still have homework to do."
"okay, talk to you later."
"yeah. talk to you later." and she hung up the phone.
she stood there for a moment, frozen. then she ran into her room and pulled the bed
from the wall. she crawled into the space between the structure of the house and her
mattress. she pulled her knees up to her stomach, and wrapped her arms around her
shins.
that's when the tears started to fall.
I came around the corner of the bed and sat on the floor, watching her. little tufts of
my shedded black and white fur had merged into grey heaps, that, accumulated under
the bed for months, now swirled around her feet like tumbleweeds in a long-
abandonned town.
her sobs stung my audits, like needles piercing them. I approached her quietly. she
relaxed the lock that was keeping her knees bent and leaned forward to scoop me into
her arms. her back slid down the wall as she relaxed enough for me to lay accross her
stomach. I usually squirmed unil she released me when she did this, but not this time. it
would simply depress her more.
the tears kept falling, like a river with an endless source.
"why did he do this to me?" she whispered hoarsely, scratching the fur behind my
ear.
I looked at her mournfully.
"there's a huge hole in my my chest, and the edges burn." she winced. the fingers of
her right hand fluttered from my back to her chest, as though she expected to be able to
put her hand through to the other side. "now I know how Bella felt when Edward left
her."
she looked up at the ceiling, as if the answer to all her questions would appear there. I
followed her gaze, but saw nothing. she looked down at me again and ran her finger
under my chin. I purred softly.
the phone rang.
and again.
and again.
she sighed and scooped me into her arms, ambling to her feet. she put my down on
the bed and picked up the phone.
"hullo?" she croaked.
"it's Mom. you okay?"
"yeah." she sniffled. "I just read a sad part in my book," she lied.
"well I'll be home soon."
"okay."
"the traffic's pretty light. I'll be there in a few minutes."
"okay," she repeated.
she hung up the phone before going into the washroom to wash of the mascara that
had bled down her cheeks.
I stared after her, auds swiveling at the sound of her rummaging through the drawers.
I curled into a ball at the foot of the bed. I silently scolded the boy behind her tears
before falling asleep.
"I hope you're happy."
